CEWE Photo Award is once again the largest photo competition in the world
Over half a million photos at the CEWE Photo Award 2023
The CEWE Photo Award has once again been given the title of "World's largest photo competition", and rightly so: the more than half a million photos were submitted by photography enthusiasts from 147 countries. Most of the photos come from Europe, but photos in the ten possible categories were also submitted from Papa New Guinea, Chile or Nepal under the motto "Our World is beautiful". Most popular: The category "Nature" with 104,753 uploaded motifs. The SOS Children's Villages worldwide should be particularly pleased with the high number of submissions, as CEWE donates 10 cents per uploaded photo to them - a total of 50,961 euros!
"Today is a day of joy for CEWE, because we have once again succeeded in declaring the CEWE Photo Award, which we created, the world's largest photo competition," says a delighted Thomas Mehls, CEWE Board Member. "People around the world are turning to photography with unabated enthusiasm, and CEWE sees it as its heartfelt duty to continue to strongly promote the topic of photo culture at all levels. In addition, we are particularly pleased to actively support the SOS Children's Villages worldwide with our high donation sum of over 50,000 euros."
Longstanding, effective partnership with SOS Children's Villages worldwide
As a successful company, CEWE sees itself as having a particular obligation to society and has been a close partner of SOS Children's Villages worldwide for ten years. This year's donations from the CEWE Photo Award will benefit an educational project of the children's relief organization in Somalia.
Lanna Idriss, Director of SOS Children's Villages worldwide and jury member of the CEWE Photo Award, comments: "The long-standing and intensive cooperation that we have enjoyed with CEWE since 2013 impressively demonstrates what we can achieve together with strong and committed partners. CEWE has supported the SOS Children's Villages with donations of more than two million euros to date. Thanks to this long-term commitment, we have already been able to successfully launch many projects. We also share a strong partnership in crisis situations: For example, CEWE already supported the care of children during the hunger crisis in Somalia in 2017 - and this year CEWE is now once again committed to helping children and families in the civil war country. With the EduCare project of SOS Children's Villages in Somalia, we offer 2,000 children access to a good basic education, we specifically support girls, train teachers, and renovate schools. At the same time, we support families in building up an economic livelihood through microcredits. In this way, we help people to help themselves so that parents can offer their children prospects for the future."
Looking forward to the jury decision on July 12, 2023
"Wait and see" is the motto for the participants of this year's CEWE Photo Award until July 12, 2023, when the best photos in each category will be selected and announced to German and international media representatives at a digital press conference. In the meantime, the seven-member international jury chaired by Michel Comte, the famous Swiss fashion and nature photographer and legend of photography, will meet to select the respective top photos in each of the ten categories from all the entries, as well as the person with the very best photograph. The coveted trophies will be presented to the lucky chosen ones at the "Photopia" photo fair in Hamburg in September. The main prize is a unique trip worth 15,000 euros, photo equipment worth 7,500 euros and photo products from CEWE worth 2,500 euros. The lucky winners of second to 1,000th place will also be rewarded with prizes.
